The San Francisco 49ers are moving closer to determining their starters on both sides of the ball but are still missing a key piece of the puzzle: free safety Jimmie Ward. Ward has been on the physically unable to Carlos Hyde Jerseys perform list since suffering a hamstring injury during the team's conditioning test on the first day of training camp. The injury has kept Ward from participating in any practices, though he still counts on the 90-man roster and has been present for meetings and workouts.

Late last week, Niners coach Kyle Shanahan indicated Ward could be back this week after going through an extended workout on Sunday. Ward did go through that workout, but even though he was close, the 49ers didn't want to risk reinjury. Colin Kaepernick Jerseys "I feel real good about Jimmie," Shanahan said. "We were hoping to get him back this week, and I really believe we could if we really wanted to. But we're trying to play it smart with him. We pushed him real hard on Sunday through a workout, wanted to see how he responded going through the same thing. Jerry Rice Jerseys He responded to both really well. I know we're going to push him hard today with the workouts and just try to see how he responds to those before we throw him out on the field. I know there's a chance to get him in the practices, but we're going to be really smart with him. I definitely think it's looking positive right now."

The sooner the Niners can get Ward back, the better, especially considering the importance of the position in new coordinator Robert Saleh's defensive scheme. Joe Montana Jerseys That defense requires the free safety to serve as the lone and final option on the back end on a consistent basis. Without Ward available, the 49ers have had to cycle through a variety of options, including Vinnie Sunseri, Jaquiski Tartt and Lorenzo Jerome. Tartt also suffered an injury that kept him out for a short time, leaving Jerome and Sunseri to fill the void. NaVorro Bowman Jerseys In Ward's absence, Jerome has proved capable and potentially earned himself a roster spot. For Ward, the biggest challenge upon his return will be taking what he's learned in meetings to the practice field while also ensuring he is physically capable of handling all that it entails. It's a task made more difficult by the fact that Ward is transitioning from cornerback. He also played safety at Northern Illinois but hasn't played there since he entered the league in 2014.
